Shimazu Stretch Therapy is a style of facilitated stretching derived from the ancient healing art of Japanese Doinjutsu. Utilised by martial arts practitioners throughout history Doinjutsu is known as the healing side of the Samurai arts and can be compared with modern day PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) stretching. Shimazu Therapy is an advanced form of flexibility training that involves both the stretching and contraction of the muscle group being targeted. Facilitated stretching is less likely to cause muscle fibre tears as the patient is moving the muscle into the pain free zone themselves.
Shimazu Therapy is most effective as a form of rehabilitation and is also excellent for targeting specific muscle groups and increasing range of movement. Shimazu Therapy takes its name from Shimazu Kenji, 19th headmaster of the Yagyu Shingan Ryu school of Classical Martial Arts and Healing.
